Latest Demo Reel

I just posted my latest demo reel! It has some shots from the latest BYU student film, Butchered Meats, and some of my own work, including the revolver with a last minute addition!

NOTE: I created a separate blog for my demo reel, along with a breakdown sheet:

Want proof?

Here is a breakdown of my lighting and compositing process on our senior film by the working title of "Meats".

There are still a lot of elements still in the works, namely his hair, table full of meat, crowd, smoke/atmospherics, etc.

This is still a work in progress but it's turning out to be one good looking film!

Modeling Done!

I declare the modeling finished for this personal texturing project I'm working on!

The next step is to UV map. Ugh. But who knows, I may grow to appreciate and even like UV mapping once I'm finished.

Latest....

I realized that I needed to beef up my texture skills (as well as modeling skills) so I decided to finally work on a piece (pun intended) that I've been wanting to do for a while now.

Above is my progress so far. I've thrown on a generic metal shader so I can see how my modeling is affecting reflections and such. Also, pay no attention to the grip, it's just temp geometry to see how my proportions are turning out.

Even though I don't own or will own a gun anytime soon, I am fascinated by them. I think I am fascinated more with the science behind this impressive machine more than the thought of hunting.

Anyway, I am learning a lot about hard surface modeling with polygons and it's this- it requires a ton of planning before any actual modeling begins, and for that I salute you modelers.

Mas Colorscripts!

I'm still learning but the important thing is I had fun painting these up!

This is a small part of our senior film we're working on. Trying to depict a poorly lit room is tough!

As always, tips are always welcome!

Tick-tock-tick-tock...

It was my intention to finish this before posting but days turned into weeks which turned into months, so here we are.

The basic premise is reminiscent of Captain Hook and the Ticking Alligator, in which the alligator is constantly hunting Captain Hook after having his hand as an appetizer.

Any suggestions on how to strengthen this beat board to reflect the above premise upon first reading?

Almost there

I feel this is getting pretty close to what I had envisioned.

progress so far...

Here's my progress so far on my personal project. I kinda abandoned it while I finished up the semester but during this christmas break I got back to working on it.

I'm starting to like the results more and more as I'm learning from my mistakes which are mostly modeling.

If you aren't working on a little scene I'd highly recommend it since it forces you to learn how every step in the pipeline affects everything else. I don't know how many times I've had to remodel things in order to not only capture the envisioned look and feel but to also get shaders and lighting to work correctly.

Overall, I'd say this current result is not too shabby.

Break Through #1

I posted a while ago about the planetarium project I'm working for a small scene that happens on the surface of Mars and I'm proud to display our first image (albeit a test image) that made it onto the planetarium dome!

This has been a long time in the making and it still has quite a way to go, but just seeing this for the first time on the dome is exciting!

Here's an idea of what it would look like on full dome:

WIP

Here's a preview of a personal project I've been slowly working on. It'll be an entire kitchen scene with emphasis put on the lighting.

I work part-time at this group home with mentally handicapped guys, nothing out of the ordinary- cook, clean, administer medications, etc, and on my down time I've noticed their kitchen has some amazing lighting scenarios (due to large windows and skylights) so I thought I'd study it by recreating the scene.

I'd say 80% of the modeling is finished, and the image above was something I was experimenting with, and yes it isn't finished (if you haven't noticed there is no drains yet)

Anyway, this will be on the back burner while I deal with school, jobs, and pregnant wife.

Summer Lighting Exercise

Here is the result of a lighting exercise I did while Francesco Giroldini was visiting Provo and giving training for us up and coming lighters. All I can say is the guy has made skillz.

*Model from Ty Carter's Dreamgiver which is turning out to be a gorgeous looking film. Keep an eye out for it.

Monochromatic Study

So I'm back for round two for digital painting with Sam Nielson and I'm happy with the way my first assignment turned out! This was a tough one to turn out, but after days of painting countless spheres I was able to match on digital canvas what was in my mind's eye.

So it is true- practice does make perfect.

WIP

I'm very excited to show a preview of what a bunch of talented guys and I have been working on during this year!

We are developing an educational film for BYU's new planetarium and we are currently working on Mars. It's a mix of fictional near-future space tourism and ongoing scientific research.

Awesome stuff!

Color Scripts!

These are my very first color scripts. Ever. They're for our senior film we are currently developing at the moment. Colors. They're fun.

This is what happens...

...when you don't consistently sketch everyday.Or carry around a sketchbook. It's been a looooong time since I've sat down and sketched. On the other hand it was tons of fun to sit down and draw! Even though I took my sketchbook out of backpack (it's usually in there) and all my pens are mostly dried up from not using them, this is proof that any ordinary paper and pen is more than enough to sketch. It was a very liberating experience! Go Joe!

That moldy stuff is supposed to be water stains. Still gotta work on that.

Update: Pottery

Minor changes but overall I think it turned out okay.

The moment machine became curious.

Here's a blast from the past. I created this while I was in Kelly's intro to animation class a while back. I'm particularly proud of it.

The little dot fluttering around is a butterfly. Again, I blame blogger for the low quality.
